The natural park of Maremma

It is impossible not to focus on nature

When it comes to Tuscany, it is impossible not to focus on nature.
The region has several parks, nature reserves and protected areas. In fact, it is one of the most popular destinations for people who love animals and nature in general.

The Interprovincial Park of Montioni is one of the most extended. It is a protected area that extends over ca 6800 hectares, on a hilly territory rich in alum, whose extraction has lasted until the last century.

The climate in the park is typically Mediterranean, with an average temperature of 16 °C throughout the year, narrow temperature ranges and dry summers. The area is virtually one of the hottest in the region.

As regards the flora, the Mediterranean vegetation and the Turkey Oaks dominate the scene.
Wetlands are covered with elms and there are areas where olive trees and cereals are cultivated.

Moreover, the spontaneous flora has gradually reappeared in the last few decades, after the countryside was abandoned. Today, you can admire meadows and garigues with shrubby and herbaceous species, including many kinds of orchids.
Out of the 495 vegetal species, 56 are rare and 5 are very rare.

If you love animals, you will be spoiled for choice. In fact, you will see many species, including roe deer, wild boars, weasels, hedgehogs, squirrels, hares, owls and barn owls, newts, frogs, dragonflies and so forth.
If you want to enrich your experience with other activities, you can take strolls, follow trails, ride horses or make biking tours.
