Saturnia hot springs

The Cascate del Mulino, warm water all year round and the Etruscan village on the hill, in the south of the Maremma.

The Saturnia hot springs are one of the most famous images of Tuscany: the Cascate del Mulino, white rock pools where the thermal water flows down at 37 degrees, free and open day and night. From Golfo del Sole it is the longest day trip in the Maremma, about an hour and a half by car, and one of the few you can make in any season.

The water rises from the spring at a constant 37.5 degrees, about 500 litres per second, rich in sulphur: that is why it has its milky blue colour and the typical smell of sulphur springs. Part of it flows through the Terme di Saturnia spa park, which is paid; the rest runs on into the stream and forms, further down, the Cascate del Mulino, the free hot springs everyone knows.

Above the springs, on a travertine hill, stands the village of Saturnia, already inhabited by the Etruscans, with its Porta Romana and fortress. All around, among hills, vineyards and olive groves, lie some of the most beautiful villages in southern Tuscany: Montemerano, Manciano, Pitigliano.

In this guide you will find how to plan your dip in the free pools, when to go to avoid the crowds and how to combine the springs with the nearby villages, starting from Golfo del Sole Hotel & Holiday Resort.

The Cascate del Mulino

The Cascate del Mulino are Saturnia's free hot springs: a series of natural pools carved into the travertine, where the warm water cascades down in steps beside an old mill. Today access is free of charge and open 24 hours a day, all year round; there are no ticket offices or opening times.

The water in the pools is around 37 degrees: in winter, when the air is cold, steam rises from the falls and the dip is even more atmospheric. The pools at the top, near the mill, are the warmest and the busiest; further down towards the stream you will find quieter spots.

There are no real changing rooms or organised facilities: arrive already in your swimsuit or change under a towel, and leave your things on the rocks. At peak times, especially at weekends and in summer, the falls are very busy.

The Terme di Saturnia spa park

About two kilometres from the falls, around the spring, is the Terme di Saturnia spa park, with the large natural pool where the water emerges at 37.5 degrees, whirlpools, wellness circuits and the resort with its spa. Here entry is paid, with day or afternoon tickets, and it is best to book online, especially at weekends.

It is the right alternative if you want changing rooms, showers, sunbeds and a restaurant, or a quieter dip. Prices, opening hours and packages change with the seasons: check them on the official Terme di Saturnia website before you go.

The village of Saturnia

The village of Saturnia sits on a hill a few kilometres from the springs and is one of the oldest settlements in the Maremma. You enter through the Porta Romana, the only gate of the ancient walls to survive almost intact, on the route of the Via Clodia. In the centre are the square with the church, small shops and restaurants, and the Rocca Aldobrandesca, the fortress remodelled by the Sienese in the fifteenth century.

You can walk round the village in under an hour, and it is the ideal stop for lunch or an aperitif after your dip, while your skin still smells of sulphur.

Practical tips for bathing

  • A dark, old swimsuit: sulphur can stain light fabrics and the smell lasts a few washes.
  • No silver jewellery: sulphur tarnishes it; better leave it in your room.
  • Water shoes: the rocks are slippery and rough in places.
  • Towel, bathrobe and a change of clothes: there are no changing rooms at the falls; in winter it is cold when you get out.
  • Drinking water and breaks: water at 37 degrees is tiring; keep dips short and rest in the shade or on dry ground.
  • A torch: the falls are not lit in the evening.
  • No valuables on view in the car.

How to get there from Golfo del Sole

From Golfo del Sole: about 100 km · an hour and a half by car

Saturnia is about an hour and a half away by car:

  • from the resort take the SS1 Aurelia southbound, towards Grosseto;
  • from Grosseto head inland following the signs for Scansano and Saturnia, or stay on the Aurelia as far as Albinia and climb towards Manciano and Saturnia;
  • for the Cascate del Mulino, follow the signs for "Cascate del Mulino" or "Terme libere" before you reach the village.

Where to park

Near the Cascate del Mulino there are parking areas that fill up quickly at weekends and in summer: arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Parking rules and charges can change, so check the signs on site. The paid spa park has its own car park.

Saturnia in a day: an itinerary

Leave the resort around 7 a.m. to be at the Cascate del Mulino before 9, when the pools are still quiet. After a couple of hours in the water, drive up to the village of Saturnia for lunch and a walk to the Porta Romana.

In the afternoon choose between relaxing at the spa park (booked in advance) or a detour to Montemerano and Pitigliano, the village built on tufa, about half an hour away. Return to Golfo del Sole for dinner.

When to go

The springs can be visited all year round, and that is the beauty of Saturnia: in winter, warm water in cold air is a unique experience, with steam wrapping the falls, and there are fewer people. In spring and autumn the weather is perfect for combining a dip with the villages.

In summer the Cascate del Mulino are very crowded in the middle of the day, especially in August and at weekends: go at dawn or at sunset. After heavy rain the stream can be murkier.

What to see near Saturnia

Saturnia lies at the heart of one of the most beautiful areas of southern Tuscany:

  • Montemerano, a few kilometres away, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, with its heart-shaped walls and the small Piazza del Castello;
  • Manciano, the main town, with its fortress and views over the Maremma to the sea;
  • Pitigliano, the village built on a tufa cliff, about half an hour away;
  • Sovana and Sorano, with the sunken roads and Etruscan necropolises.

If you are looking for a trip closer to the resort, among villages and wine, there is Bolgheri, three quarters of an hour to the north. You will find all the destinations in the section on the surroundings of Follonica.

Is Saturnia worth the trip?

Yes, in every season

It is the longest trip from Golfo del Sole, but also one of the most special: few things are worth an hour and a half on the road like a warm dip in the open air, at dawn in summer or with the steam in winter. And in the evening you are back by the sea.

At Golfo del Sole choose between hotel rooms, bungalows in the pine wood and apartments, all a short walk from the private beach of Pratoranieri.
